Abstract

Sulaimaniyah Islamic Boarding School is one of the many Islamic boarding schools in Sleman Yogyakarta. Sulaimaiyah Islamic Boarding School is a branch of IFA (International Fraternity Assosiation) or International Fraternity Foundation in Turkey. This is interesting to study considering that Islamic boarding schools are traditional Islamic educational institutions that were born in Indonesia, while Sulaimaniyah Islamic boarding school is one of the branches of Islamic educational institutions from Turkey. Because it is a branch of a Turkish boarding school, it has its own characteristics that are different from boarding schools in Indonesia in general. The difference lies in the teaching system that gets control from the center in Turkey, Sufism-based rules, learning activities for students integrated with Turkish, Turkish culture introduced to students and full scholarships for further education to Turkey given to students.

In this study there are three problem formulations, namely: the background of the establishment of the Turkish Islamic Boarding School (Pondok Pesantren Sulaimaniyah), its history and development and its contribution to the religious education of students in Santren Sleman Yogyakarta. The approach used by researchers is Sociology. The theory used is Continuity and Change by Jhon Obert Voll. The method used is the historical method, which includes four steps, namely heuristics, verification, interpretation and historiography.

The results of this study indicate that Sulaimaniyah Islamic Boarding School has a distinctive form and is different from Islamic boarding schools in general. The difference can be seen from the activities in the boarding school based on Sufism and Tariqah followed by students, the teaching system integrated with Turkish language and Tekamul education (scholarship for advanced Islamic education to Turkey). In addition, the dynamics that occurred from the beginning of the pioneering and development of the Sulaimaniyah Islamic Boarding School showed a contribution that focused on the santri. Preparing the students to go to Tekamul.
